Good and Bad Effects of Technology to Our Lives - Is There a Way to Change It?

Good and Bad Effects of Technology to Our Lives - Is There a Way to Change It?

ItemTitle

Many of us are always thankful for our daily usage of today's modern technology. Every day, we get to perform our daily tasks easier because we have the helpful materials and gadgets that keep us at ease. Life will never be as easy as we look at it now without the advancement of technology. Think of how ancient people back then struggle just to create fire. Now, we can make one with just a click. Recall how transportation was done back then and see how much it has improved now. We are all living a better and more comfortable life because of our technology.

Even though we go on with our daily lives with such comfort and ease, there are things that we sacrifice for it. Because of the on-going technological demands, we have continuously taken for granted the effects it will cost us, and now we slowly notice them coming. Just for instance, the machines that we are using are not all there is. We use them very effectively, but are slowly destroying our planet because of them. Machines uses up a lot of heat energy. We use fuel to accommodate this need. It will then dispose wastes that are turned into smoke. It pollutes our air giving us unhealthy environment to breathe in. Mountainous areas have been turned into industrialized sites. Now even rain forests are being endangered. Trees are being logged to be made into furniture, and for constructions. We now have bare mountains.

There are submarines, ships of the largest, best ones. They all add up polluting our ocean. The cars and land vehicles we are using as well. They help us go from place to place easier and faster, but the polluted air it creates is devastating.

We have developed the use of plastics because it will cost easier production so that one can create more in just a fraction of time. They are disposables so that we can buy them cheaper. But when we throw these, they add up to the mountains of wastes being dumped onto a waste disposal area each day. Just imagine how much garbage s single person can collect in just one day, and multiply that to billions of people. Waste disposal has been one of the biggest problems of our society today. We have built so many things that we end up throwing after just one usage.

Maybe there are reasons for us to be grateful having all these modern equipments, and they are sure to help us in many ways. But the fact that we are all destroying our environment. It can have really good effects on us, but it also creates a devastating effect to our environment that destroys our health and living.

Capital Budgeting in the Healthcare Industry

ItemTitle

Over the past few months, the proposed healthcare reform has been the subject of much discussion and the healthcare industry has come under intense scrutiny as a result of the administration's efforts to curtail the increasing cost of healthcare. As an offshoot of the increasing cost of healthcare now more than ever hospitals have been placed in a situation whereby capital budgeting has become a necessary tool; Not only for sustenance but mostly for survival. Absence of a sound capital budgeting policy might potentially spell disaster for hospitals because an increase in cost accompanied by a decrease in revenue negatively impacts the bottom line and when funds are limited, it is essential to have a game plan of how the funds are to be used otherwise the hospital might find itself in a precarious situation.

Capital budgeting refers to the analysis of investment alternatives involving cash flows received or paid over a certain period of time. More often than not, the best alternative is usually the one that yields the greatest cash flow over time. This point can be disputed because other hospitals might place much emphasis on non-monetary results. In such cases, the best alternative is usually the one that comes as close as possible to yielding results that catapults the hospital closer to its objectives. Capital budgeting is a complicated process in the sense that great care has to be taken in the selection process and competing forces makes it the more challenging. Where there is competition, the possibility of politics being a factor is heightened and politics often times has its drawbacks especially when the voice of the minority is drowned out by the majority or the louder voice.

In order to better understand how capital budgeting works in the healthcare industry, we'll explore three different scenarios that do play out every once in a while in most hospitals throughout the country. For instance, Human Resources propose a day care facility for employees with children. Justification being: turnover rate of employees will be minimized and more nurses will potentially be attracted to the hospital because of the day care services offered. Turnover is costly to the hospital. Therefore, even though the project does not increase revenue, the project will get to benefit the hospital through reduced costs.

The second scenario is the Imaging Services Department proposes the purchase of an additional CT scanner to ease the bottleneck and the backlog of work in the department. Purchase of a scanner is quite costly and therefore, if the present one is functional is there a need for a second one? One might argue that the high demand for usage creates tension between employees, wear and tear of the machine increases maintenance costs, overtime pay for the technicians' increases overhead costs and the hospital is left vulnerable in the event that the current scanner seizes to function. These are all valid considerations. However, one wonders; does the total benefit exceed the total cost?

The last scenario is a group of doctors working for the hospital propose the purchase of a special machine that eliminates the need for in house hospitalization of patients. With the new machine comes the benefit of reduced hospitalization. With reduced hospitalization of patients, the hospital might be better placed to reduce variable costs associated with the use of the facilities and safety might be enhanced because the possibility of the hospital exceeding capacity will be greatly reduced by having fewer patients in the facilities. The only drawback is the massive costs involved. The machine requires a large capital outlay upfront. Therefore, in as much as the purchase sounds good, the other alternatives sound equally as good if not better.

Faced with the three alternatives, a financial manager in the healthcare industry should determine the opportunity cost of capital. Opportunity cost of capital works on the fundamental law of finance that states that a dollar today is not the same as a dollar tomorrow. Therefore, when analyzing the three alternatives, the time value of money should not be ignored because one might come to a wrong conclusion if one doesn't consider the time value of money in the analysis. Future cash flows are discounted to the present value using a stated interest rate. Once the present value of all the alternatives is established, then the alternative that yields the highest present value is considered to be the best option. This method of analysis is known as the discounted cash flow method and from a personal standpoint; this method should be used widely in the healthcare industry because it is guided by the important law of finance stated above. I acknowledge the fact that each hospital is unique and estimating the future cash flow is difficult in other instances. In this case, other methods should be considered. However, discounted cash flow method though imperfect at times should be given first priority if all else is clear and all the variables are known.

2012, Presidential Election

ItemTitle

The 2012 Presidential election is going to be interesting. While the world watches, many interesting and fascinating events will occur. I know it is said every election, at least in the last 15 years, but this is the most critical election in modern time. The fate of not only the United States, but the entire free world as well, hangs in the balance.

Do we continue on the path to destruction by embracing socialism and even worse Marxism, or do we find our way back to what our founding fathers intended for this country and the world, freedom and a place where mankind could reach it's highest potential without the interference of government.

As has already been evidenced, many individuals will play a part in this election, and each will play a major role in the final outcome. The moment I saw Sarah Palin in 2008 I knew she would be a major player and possibly president someday. Everyone seems to forget, John McCain and Sarah were leading the 2008 presidential polls, until the financial crisis which conveniently occurred 5 weeks before the election.(October surprise?)

She was without a doubt the first to speak out, her boldness set the way for others to follow, as a result she took much heat for this. Such is the plight for trend setters. Many see her as radical, this just goes to show how far our country has drifted from the path originally set by our founding fathers. In today's world John Kennedy and Ronald Reagan would be labeled extreme and would have little chance of getting elected to anything.

Following Governor Palin came Michelle Bachmann, Ron Paul, Rick Perry and others, each contributing much to the campaign. Although most have fallen out of the hunt as of today, they still continue to contribute and slowly educate the American citizen as to the virtues of their beliefs.

Deep down, most people know that what they are saying is true, however, people have been so mis-educated by not only the media, but our educational system and misinformed parents as well, they have lost sight of the basic values we as human souls are all instilled with.

People have been so indoctrinated by a society that teaches many to be dependent on government and their entitlements and the misconception it creates. Many believe that life is easier if someone does everything and pays for everything for them. This may be true for a while, but sooner or later, there is a price to pay, the one with the money is the one in control of your life. Do you want the government in control of your life.

This election will determine the fate of not only the United States and it's citizens but the fate of the world for many years to come. Do we want to continue down the path of socialism and destruction, or do we want to gradually return to the values and work ethic our country was founded on?

Do we want to take the easy way out, or do we want to return to the time tested values that have sustained generations of people throughout the ages? Do we want to put forth a little extra effort to guarantee of life similar to ours for generations of our descendants, or do we want to sentence them to a life of subjugation and poverty, a life with little freedom and opportunity?

Someday you may return to this planet, what do you want to find if and when you do

Calling 2012 Elections Before the Final Count Is Unethical - Let Me Explain

ItemTitle

The Hawaiian election polls had only been closed for a very short time before Mitt Romney gave his concession speech. He probably felt he had to because it looked as if the Electoral College math could not give him a victory. But the reality is anything could happen, and California and several other very large populated states only had a fraction of the ballots counted. Okay so, let's talk shall we?

You see, CNN projected President Obama the winner of the election when only 10% of the ballots were counted in CA, and within 15-20 minutes all the other networks followed suit. In the swing state of Ohio, the coal miner area counties hadn't been counted and several networks; ABC, FOX, CBS, and CNN all had given Ohio to President Obama, thus clinching the election. These types of things disenfranchise the voters, making them believe their votes don't count, and whereas, they might not count for much, each one is a personal vote for themselves, their family, and their country moving forward.

How dare we dishonor their votes, many had to go out of their way to vote, taking off work, driving their cars as .00 a gallon, and standing in line donating their cause to their duty as citizens. How completely disrespectful the TV networks are to be the first to declare a winner. They feel it is their right as media outlets, after they do exit polling without the actual vote count, all this after their survey pollsters have actually shaped the outcome in advance. Does the voter even matter anymore, is all this a big show, somehow rigged by mass media.

In some ways this is the epitome of socialism crushing down the will of the individual and the human spirit - showing how they don't matter - because everyone else or even the "majority" has already decided. That in and of itself is pretty anti-American, indeed it goes against everything we stand for. As a citizen of California who votes against the grain, that is to say other than left-leaning socialism, I am appalled at the disrespect. Indeed, I had learned my lesson once some 20-years ago, and hadn't voted since.

Still, in this last election, 2012 election, I realized that although my vote counts for squat, I still decided that this might well be the most important election in 30-years - so I voted. Only to be disrespected again by the quick concession speech, and hardcore push by the Cable Networks to get it over with. I am quite convinced my ballot, provisional, won't be counted for days, and maybe not at all unless there was an extremely close race in my district.

If we fail to honor the votes, and voices of our citizens, then we will alienate them. I am concerned, not for me, I intellectually understand all the myriad of issues involved in why things happen the way they do, but rather I am worried we are busy ripping the hearts and souls out of good Americans that really care, training them that they don't matter at all. What kind of message does that send? I would submit to you it sends the wrong message.

The "Boiled Frog Phenomenon"

ItemTitle

As (Polard, 2004) mentioned, If you take a frog and put it in a pot of extremely hot water, it's obvious that frog will jump and try to get out of the water. However, if you put that same frog in a pot of water that is tepid, and turn the heat on very low, that frog will lay there very quietly; and as the water gradually heats up the frog will calmly fall in a state of unconsciousness; and eventually allow itself to be boiled to death.

Now many of us maybe asking why didn't the frog jump out of the pot. After all, there was no barrier between him and his freedom. Well a big reason why the Frog did not jump is due to the fact his threat sensing capability is generated by unexpected changes, not slow ones but changes that are gradual. His survival threat was below his ability to identify those changes.

The whole inference of the frog metaphor for organizations is that we as a whole should try and identify the threats of our survival at an early stage when we still have time to plan rather than react to that particular threat; which will be too late. Furthermore, we must also learn how to reduce our threshold of change in order to be able to identify smaller changes that are occurring in our environment.

A perfect example of the Boiling Frog would be our government; they continue to ignore continuous threats to our economy survival. Our government tends to react only to sudden changes and situations. If we look back at September 11th, 2001 that particular incident was a perfect example of the Boil Frog. According to many, the government had great understanding and knowledge on terror attacks; however they failed to plan ahead and at the same time were very careless about information's they had. As a result, disaster strikes which finally leads them to make better changes.

If we dissect the term " The Boil frog Phenomenon" in business situations, it will show how organization are not able to identify slow and gradual threats within the organization and of course react only to sudden changes. By organizations focusing only of the satisfaction of key consumers, they failed to detect the continuous threats that the opposition is putting out there; which could play a huge role in the market dynamics in a short period of time (David, 2007). If we really think about it, we don't have enough proof that key consumers will always stick around when our competitors are putting better products out in the market.

As a result, organizations should react at an early stage when there's still time to plan rather than finding themselves in a difficult situation at a later stage. Organization should try their best to not get caught up in the boil frog phenomenon. In fact, it would be to their advantage if they could try recognizing threats that could be harmful to the organization otherwise the survival for such organization could be extremely difficult in today's very competitive industry.

Canadian Political Parties - Ideology Breakdown

ItemTitle

When you examine the politics of Canada you must examine all the Canadian political parties both federal and provincial. However, the incongruity of parties among these levels of government can be understandably confusing to some, especially young people and newcomers to this great country. If you ever wanted to get a quick an easy summary of the political parties in Canada, you came to the right place.

This article lays out in admittedly and purposely simple terms the ideologies of the federal political parties in Canada and provides a quick summary of each. It is meant to be simple and non-exhaustive. It is intended to act as a quick reference.

I believe that the best way for people who don't know a thing about Canadian politics but who want to learn is to first look at the federal Canadian political parties. These parties form the basis of party politics as most of the federal parties have provincial arms as well. However, some provinces' main parties are not associated with any federal party although they may have close ties to a specific federal party.

To keep things simple I will focus strictly on the federal parties. There are five main political parties in Canada and in this piece I will provide a short summary of each.

Conservative Party (current government)

Ideology:
-conservatism
-social and fiscal conservatism
-right-libertarianism, market economy
Leader: Stephen Harper - Prime Minister of Canada
Summary: On the classic political spectrum the Conservative party of Canada falls on the right to the centre-right. Current seats in the House of Commons: 143

Liberal Party

Ideology:
-The 'Third Way'
-liberalism
-social liberalism
-moderate politics, mixed economy
Leader: Michael Ignatieff
Summary: Official opposition in parliament. Governed Canada for most of the 20th century. Widely considered to be centre-left to centre on the political spectrum. Current seats in the House of Commons: 77

Bloc Quebecois

Ideology:
-social democracy
-Quebec sovereignty
-socialist nationalism
-nominates candidates in Quebec only
Leader: Gilles Duceppe
Summary: Third largest amount of seats in the House of commons. The vast majority of the Bloc's members and supporters advocate for Quebec to separate from Canada and become an independent nation. The party falls on the left wing of the political spectrum. Current seats in the House of Commons: 47

New Democratic Party

Ideology:
-social democracy
-populism
-democratic socialism
-'New Left' politics
Leader: Jack Layton
Summary: Considered a "progressive party" When it comes to the political spectrum, the party would fall somewhere between the left and centre-left although it a little closer to the centre-left. The NDP is further to the left than the Liberals however. Current seats in the House of Commons: 36

Green Party

Ideology:
-green politics
-see "green politics"
Leader: Elizabeth May
Summary: As of 2009 the Greens are polling an average of 8-12%. While technically Greens have factions that fall on all sides of the political spectrum, the Green Party of Canada's ideology is widely considered to be left wing. Current seats in the House of Commons: none.

I hope this has been helpful to anyone interested in understanding the basics of the Canadian political parties. Thanks for reading!

Classification of Values

Education is a social process; Education is growth;
Education is not preparation for life; Education is life itself. --- John Dewey

The prosperity of a country depends not on the abundance of its revenues, not on the strength of its fortifications, not on the beauty of its public buildings; but it consists in the number of its cultivated citizens, in its men of education, enlightenment and character. ---martin Luther.

If health is lost something is lost.
If character is lost everything is lost. ---M.K. Gandhi (Father of Indian Nation)

Education is a social process; Education is growth;

If wealth is lost nothing is lost.
If health is lost something is lost.
If character is lost everything is lost. ---M.K. Gandhi (Father of Indian Nation)

Value is a conception, explicit, distinctive of an individual or characteristic of a group of the desirable which influences the selection from available, means and ends of action.

Values are the desirable ends, goals or modes of action which makes human behaviour selective. Value not only orients but also determines human behaviour.

Classification of Values:
It is necessary to know types of values. It is necessary to improve values in the children.

My Wife Is Not Happy - The Cold Hard Truth That Someone Has To Tell You

ItemTitle

It's never a good sign when you're saying my wife is not happy, or typing something like that into a search engine.

If you're feeling like your marriage is crashing down...the truth is you might be right. But the other part of that truth is that there' hope and a way to fix it.

This happens to a lot of marriages and frankly there's usually one main reason that causes you to be in a position where you're saying my wife is not happy.

The Reason You're Wife Is Not Happy...

Since you're reading this, then I can pretty much assume that it's because you're wife in not happy much of the time, and not just not happy today. So therefore there's starting to be a pattern here.

And I'm also going to assume that you feel that she's mostly just not happy with you. If she's not happy at all with everything then there's a chance that she's depressed or dealing with some other mental anguish. That's totally different than your wife not being with YOU.

Now here's the thing that might be hard to swallow. If your wife is unhappy with you it's most likely because of you and the person that you've become. That's tough for a lot of people to swallow and hard for most husbands to come to grips with.

It was for me in fact. I was in a marriage that was having major problems, then I fixed that aspect of my marriage. Things were looking good, but then my wife started slipping away again and I realized (after some research) what was going on.

I said to myself "my wife is not happy because I haven't been the type of man that she instinctively wants". In other words I've seized to be the man of the house. I've stopped being the king of my castle and leading my family.

The funny part is that if you were to ask my wife, or your wife, they would likely both say that this is totally not true, and that they wanted a man who was caring, and loving, said sweet things to them, bought them stuff, and never even dreamed of rocking the boat in the home. They will tell you that they want a man who never looks at other women, and never would dream of wanting time to himself or a man cave.

But when you study anthropology like I did to figure out what the heck was going on, and why I was stuck saying my wife is not happy...and when you study socialism and human dynamics you begin to see that even your wife doesn't know what the heck she wants consciously.

That's because the traits of the MAN that makes her happy is buried deep down into her DNA. This is why she's been consciously trying to change you ever since she got you, and why she keeps on getting more and more unhappy with you as time goes by.

She's literally turning you into exactly what she doesn't want you to be. She's turning you into a beta-cized male and deep down instinctively at a primal level she is not wired to feel attraction to that type of man. She wants a man who is king of the castle, and the leader.

When you start to become that, you'll see, like I saw instantly that her attitude toward you begins to change. Her attraction for you heightens and she's happier on an extremely deep level because that's who she really is. That's when you stop having to say my wife is not happy!

The Types of Autoclave

ItemTitle

We are in need of infection control for medical purpose. People are becoming more and more concerned about controlling pathogenic microorganism via medical instruments. Controlling the contamination is very important to prevent dangerous pathogenic microorganism transfer from one person to another.

There is an instrument that is used to sterilize medical instruments from pathogenic microorganisms. The instrument is called autoclave sterilizer. There are several types of autoclave that we can find on the market. In this article I am going to explain each type.

1. Positive Pressure Displacement
This type is the improvement of downward displacement type. The steam is created within a second in separate unit (steam generator). The steam is released to the sterilization chamber to start the sterilization progress.

2. Negative Pressure Displacement
This type is one of the most recommended types of autoclave sterilizer. It is very accurate and it can achieve high sterility assurance level. The disappointing fact is that sometimes the system is too large and too expensive.

3. Downward Displacement
This unit is also called as the gravity displacement autoclave. This unit heats water that becomes steam. The steam then forces the air in the chamber to go through the drain hole. The drain hole is closed once the temperature is sufficient for the serialization process to begin.

4. Triple Vacuum Displacement
This type is similar to the negative pressure displacement type. This unit is named "triple vacuum" because there are three process of removing the air and the steam's pulse. This unit is perfect to sterile any kind of instruments.

5. Type "N" or type "B"
There are two classifications of autoclaves. You can find type "N" or type "B". Type "N" does not use vacuum to remove air from the chamber. Contrary, type "B" uses vacuum pump in operation.

From the classification that I have explained above, I hope that you can understand more about each type of autoclave. Understanding the type can be beneficial when you are going to get an autoclave.
